Pupil Flashcards
what is miosis
iris sphincter contracts the pupil via CN3
what is mydriasis
iris dilator muscle dilates via symp
what is aniscoria
unequal pupil sizes
what is physiological anisocria
less than 1mm (25%) of pop
what is pathologic aniscoria
> 1mm
what is a mydriatic disorder
abnormal pupil unable to constrict
causes of mydriatic disorder
CN3 palsy, acute angle glaucoma, adie’s pupil, trauma
what causes miotic disorder
horners, iritis, cholinergic drugs
what is pathway of pupillary reaction to light
- light stims retina>pretectal nucleus>BOTH erdinger westphals> ciliary ganglion>iris sphincter contraction
what is relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD)
get a paradoxical dilation of the affected eye when the flashlight is shone in during the swinging flashlight test
2 causes of RAPD
- optic nerve disease
2. retinal disease
6 things that do NOT cause RAPD
- cataract
- corneal scar
- refractive error
- cortical blindness
- vitreous hemmorage
- functional visual loss
