Joints Flashcards
3 main types of joints
fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
Classification of joints based on
type of movement, amount of movement, structure
Qualities of fibrous joint
- don’t move much
- formed by fibrous tissue
2 types of cartilaginous joints
primary and secondary
Type of cartilage in primary cart joint
hyaline
type of cartilage in sec cart. joint
fibrocartelage
Characteristics of synovial joint
- highly movable
- connected by joint capsule containing synovial fluid
Limiter of movement
ligaments and bony structures
Direction of long axis
top to bottom (long bones)
Direction of coronal axis
side to side
direction of saggital axis
back to front
3 movement pairs
- Adduction/abduction
- flexion/extension
- internal/external rotation
Plane and axis of each movement
Adduction - coronal plane/sag axis
Flexion - sag. plane, cor axis
Rotation - long axis/transverse plane
Types of synovial joints (6) and movements
- hinge - flexion
- pivot - rotation
- Condyloid - flexion + aduction = circumduction
- plane - sliding
- ball & socket - all 3 movements
- Saddle - flexion + abduction
2 types of ligaments
extrinsic - reinforce, but connected to other bones
intrinsic - connected to joint bones
