  1. use when RCTs not feasable
  2. best design when assessing harms of something (can’t RCT)
  3. can assess prognosis
  4. strong for assessing causation (temporal)
  5. good flexibility, precision, anc control for assessing exposres
  6. can collect on multiple outcomes
  7. limits recall bias
