- start with inception cohort
- assess particpant exposure at baseline and divide into groups based on exposure status
- can be prospective or retrospective

- use when RCTs not feasable
- best design when assessing harms of something (can’t RCT)
- can assess prognosis
- strong for assessing causation (temporal)
- good flexibility, precision, anc control for assessing exposres
- can collect on multiple outcomes
- limits recall bias
