Brainstem and cranial nerves 1 Flashcards
1
Q
what are 3 portions of brainstem
A
- midbrain
- pons
- medulla
2
Q
what are diffs. b/w grey matter in brainstem vs. cord (3)
A
- in cord is continuous, but the stem has functionally specialized nuclei
- brainstem serve special sense: hearing, balance, taste
- contains reticular formation: maintains vital functions and level of arousal
3
Q
what are 2 decscending white matter tracts in the stem
A
- voluntary motor (corticospinal, corticobulbar)
2. involuntary motor
4
Q
what does involuntary motor control
A
- posture
- muscle tone
- autonomic functions
5
Q
what are 2 main ascending white matter tracts in brainstem
A
- STT and DC for conscious somatosensation
2. from cord to cerebellum - for proprioception to coordinate movement
6
Q
what are 2 main white matter surface features in brain stem
A
- peduncles - connect midbrain to cerebral hemispheres
2. pyramids
7
Q
what are 3 cerebellar peduncles and what do they connect?
A
- superior - midbrain to cerebellum
- middle - pons to cerebellum
- inferior - medulla to cerebellum
8
Q
what are 2 ways a tumor can impinge on the brainstem
A
- extramedullary - eg tumor from outside
2. intramedullary - tumor stroke from inside
9
Q
what does the timeline tell you about a lesion
A
fast -stroke
slow - tumor
