asbestotis - diffuse intersitial fibrosis of lung tissue that shows up 15-20 years later
other diseases associated with asbestos
- pleural effusions
- pleural plaques
- pleural thickening
- atelectasis
- lung cancer
- mesothelioma
risk factors for lead exposure
- battery manufacturing, construction, soldering, rubber and plastic industry, pottery ceramics
other sources of lead, especially kids
paint, batteries, old industrial sites, water pipes
main effects of lead (5)
- neurocog. - weakness and mental delays
- aenemia
- development and reproductive effects
- hypertension
- endocrine with vit. D
levels of concern for lead (umol/L)
.3-.5 - above average
.5-1 - monitor and retest
1-2 - refer to specialist - consider chelation
>2 urgent care with possible hospitalization
what to do if confirmed lead
- refer to appropriate resource
- communicate with employer and MOL
- report WSIB if indicated
- public health if larger exposure
