Intro to bacteriology Flashcards
3 uses for gram stain
- provides basis for empiric antibiotic therapy
- may indicate the need for lab procedures not normally used (fungi)
- helps assess adequacy of specimen (look for squam. cells)
3 reasons why the gram stain is different in diff. bacteria
- diffs. in cell wall petidoglycan layer
- presence of ribonucleate in Gram+ cell walls
- diffs. in cell wall permeability
what will be seen in staphylococcus spp
gram+, cocci in clusters
what is special test in staph
coagulase test - aureus will have coagulase in it
what will be seen in streptococcus species
gram+ cocci in chains
what is special test in strep
hemolysis testing
what would be seen in group A streps
beta-hemolytic in short chains
what will be seen in strep. pneumonae
gram+ diplococci
what will be seen in enterococcus
gram+ cocci in chains
what will be seen in cornybacterim
gram+ baccili in V or palisades
what will be seen in baccilus
gram+ bacilli in short rods
what is special about cornybacterium and bacillus
normal flora that aren’t usually concerned about
what is bad bacillus
B. anthracis
what will be seen in E.Coli
gram- bacilli
what will be seen in haemophilus
gram- coccobacilli
