At Brainscape, we’re not just building a study app. We’re building a better brain… yours. From our origin story to our meticulous product design, every pixel of the Brainscape story has been a quest to help you reach your goals faster, through stronger study habits.
This isn’t simply a tagline. It’s our mission, our method, and our slightly unhealthy obsession. We're obsessed with Brainscape because it's the product that we want for ourselves.
In 2006, Andrew Cohen could barely order breakfast in Spanish, which was a problem because he lived in Panama, working a job that required him to speak in front of hundreds of important people. He tried just about every study app and website but found them useless for long-term retention. So he did what any self-respecting nerd would do: he coded his own Excel macro to optimize his Spanish studies. What happened over the next few months astonished few people more than Andrew: he became fluent.

After quitting his job and pursuing a Masters degree in education technology, Andrew realized that the same method he had used to dominate Spanish could also help millions of other people scientifically optimize the way they study any subject, from academic classes and languages, to professional certifications and job skills. And thus, Brainscape was born!
In 2018—after several years of false starts, exciting growth spikes, near-fatal mistakes, and product overhauls—Brainscape finally established its founding executive team: Andrew Cohen, Andy Lutz, Jay Stramel, Jonathan Thomas, and Ron Cadet. These tech veterans bring over 100 years of collective experience organizing the world's knowledge.
Today, Brainscape boasts a fully remote team of dozens of visionaries, living in multiple countries, serving millions of learners all over the world.
All because one man sucked at Spanish.
