Close one nostril and identify a scent
2-test
(snell, am I holding up 2 fingers?)
Snellen test. Can use clock in room or ask pt to tell you how many fingers you’re holding up from a distance

(perrla is your fav number)
Use pen light; check one eye at a time
(test 6 cardinal field of gaze, PERRLA)
4-test
(four noses down)
Have the patient look down toward nose
5-test
Ask pt to clench teeth and palpate masseter muscle.
Test facial sensation w/gauze or or light touch (eyes closed)
6-test
(sex left and right)
Have patient look left and right
7-test
(7 eyes go to heaven)
Ask pt. to smile, raise eye brows; keep eyes closed while you try to open them
8-test
(whisper 8 is enough)
Use tuning fork /rub hair/whisper
Check gait, balance
9-test
(ahh, it’s 9)
Touch the back of the throat with tongue depressor
Have pt. say “Ahh”
10-test
(ahh, it’s 10 also)
Assessed with CNIX
(cough, say ahh)

Have pt. shrug shoulder and rotate head

stick tongue out move it internally from cheek to cheek
PNS - dorsal root - on test
travels afferent path - carries sensory info from peripheral toward CNS
ventral root
travels efferent - carries impulses away from the cns towards the periphery for motor control
