CF Flashcards
CF definition
CF is a genetic disorder affecting the lungs and digestive system due to mutations in the CFTR gene.
CF manifestations
Chronic constipation: Difficulty passing stools regularly, abdominal discomfort.
Steatorrhea and Azotorrhea: Foul-smelling, greasy stools due to poor fat absorption, excessive gas production.
Ear infections: Recurrent middle ear infections causing pain, fever, and irritability.
Failure to thrive/poor weight gain: Inadequate weight gain despite adequate caloric intake, resulting from malabsorption of nutrients.
Respiratory issues: Coughing, wheezing, and recurrent chest infections due to thick, sticky mucus in the airways.
CF - digestion
Digestive system: Dysfunction in the production of digestive enzymes results in malabsorption of nutrients, chronic constipation, steatorrhea, and azotorrhea.
integumentary
Integumentary system: Sweat gland dysfunction resulting in increased sodium & chloride concentration.
