Antepartum quiz Flashcards
Low hcg level in pregnancy
ectopic pregnancy
Goodell’s sign
Softening of the cervix
Positive (Diagnostic) - at how many weeks?
Usually within 12 weeks after a missed period.
positive (see, hear, and feel the baby is positive)
Visualising the fetus by ultrasound, palpating for fetal movements, and hearing a fetal heartbeat
Negle’s rule
first day of last period, subtract 3 months, add 7 days
Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) (HG tv supports the leutentant)
Responsible for maintaining the maternal corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone and estrogen with synthesis occurring before implantation, production by fetal trophoblast cells until placenta is developed sufficient to take over that function. Basic for early pregnancy tests because it appears in the maternal bloodstream soon after implantation. Production peaks 8 weeks and then gradually declines.
Estrogen (estrogen in leutenant’s hous scares fish)
● Secreted by the corpus luteum until the placenta takes over.
● Inhibits secretion of FSH and LH from anterior pituiatrysuprressing ovulation.
● Stimulates growth of the maternal tissue, uterus, breast tissue, genitalia.
● Relaxes joints and ligaments.
● Increased vascularity.
Progesterone (prodigy the same as ester, but also loves endometrium)
hormone of pregnancy because it supports the endometrium of the uterus, inhibits uterine contractility, and assists in the development of the breasts for lactation. Secreted by the corpus luteum until the placenta takes over. Inhibits secretion of FSH and LH from anterior pituiatrysuprressing ovulation.
Serum prolactin:
prepares breasts for lactation.
Oxytocin:
stimulates contractions and milk ejection.
Human placental lactogen (hPL) (human growth hormone) (humans need glucose)
preparation for mammary glands for lactation and involved in the process of making glucose available for fetal growth. It acts as a growth hormone, decreases maternal metabolism of glucose, increases fatty acid for metabolic needs
Lightening
By 40 weeks, the fetal head begins to descend and engage in the pelvis, which is termed lightening.
lightening happens 2 weeks before birth.
Quickening
16 to 20 weeks. Second trimester
1st trimester - normal weight gain
weight gain should be about 3.5 to 5 lb. For underweight women, weight gain should be at least 5 lb. For overweight women, weight gain should be about 2 lb.
2nd and 3rd trimester - normal weight gain
weight gain should be about 1 pound per week. For underweight women, weight gain should be slightly more than 1 pound per week. For overweight women, weight gain should be about two thirds of a pound per week
