rapid systemic uptake of the drug is needed by the body and when a relatively prolonged action is required
IM’s deliver fast or slow?
deliver slow, sustained release over hours, days, or weeks
meds in oil based (18-25 don’t need oil)
oil-based solutions should be administered with an 18- to 25-gauge needle
meds in aqueous - gauge (gauge in the water inches)

what to consider when choosing a site?
age of the patient, medication type, and medication volume
Vastus lateralis (baby on lateralus)
5∕8″ to 1¼″
Deltoid (children) (same as lat)
5∕8″ to 1¼″
Deltoid (adults) (little more)

Ventrogluteal (adults) (glute in adults is the biggest)
