Sep 3 Flashcards
Post partum: 3 things to check for

Extremity check
Post partum checks: Fundus height

caput succedaneum vs cephalohematoma
caput succedaneum = C.S. = crosses sutures
OB meds: Tocolytics used to
slow contractions
OB meds: Tocolytic examples
terbutaline, magnesium sulfate
OB meds: Tocolytic: terbutaline causes
maternal tachy
OB meds: Tocolytic: magnesium sulfate causes
hypermagnesia (which makes everything go down)
If reflexes go below 1 or RR below 12, stop the infusion
OB meds: Oxytoxics are used to
stimulate contractions
OB meds: Methergine is used to
stimulate contractions (its an oxytoxic)
OB meds: Drugs for increasing fetal lung maturity
Betamethasone
Surfactant

pick the answer where both numbers have a 1
think I from IM looks like a 1

Piaget: 0 - 2 years
Only think about the present
Piaget: 3 - 6 years
Pre op (think pre school)
Illogical, can’t reason
Piaget: 7 - 11 years
Concrete
Live strictly by the rules
Piaget: 12 - 15 years
Formal operation
abstract thinking
Piaget: 3 - 6 years: how should you teach
shortly before the event (answers that say, “the morning of” etc)
But you can also give a TOUR ahead of time
Piaget: 7 - 11 years: how do you teach them
a couples ahead of time
you can teach them skills
Pediatric teaching Hint: if it says “skills” in the question, think
7 to 11
Pediatric teaching Hint: if it says “manage” in the question, think
12 - 15 (because younger kids can’t be trusted to manage their situation)
Prioritizing who is the sickest: Look at the dx, but more importantly
look at the modifying phrase
Prioritizing who is the sickest: Acute and Chronic
Acute beats chronic (its not just ABC)
Prioritizing who is the sickest: Post op
fresh post op (12 hours) beats medical or other surgical, even if the other surgery is more intense, look at the fresh post op
Rather than focusing on the severity of the symptoms, consider
if they’re expected of unexpected
temp 105
even if its expected, the patient is automatically unstable and should be high priority
If you can’t decide who is top priority (AFTER the hints) consider the order of organs:
Brain Lung Heart liver kidney
the only meds a UAP can give
topical OTC barrier cream
Guess: diet question
chicken, then fish
Toddler diet question hint
pick finger foods, even if its not the most healthy
If you have no idea what a drug is but the route is PO, pick a SE that has to do with
GI
Growth and development; if no clue pick
that it’s a normal finding
If in doubt about the ages in which a child should be able to do something, choose
the older age
If they give you an age and your stuck between which is an appropriate task
pick the easier one
Never push
