Vessels Of Orbit Flashcards
Ophthalmic artery origin
ICA as it leaves cavernous sinus
Ophthalmic artery course and end
- Enters optic foramen inferolateral to optic nerve then becomes lateral to it
- In orbit, the artery crosses optic nerve from lateral to medial
- Passes forwards along orbital medial wall between superior oblique muscle and medial rectus muscles
- Ends by dividing into 2 terminal branches
Terminal branches of ophthalmic artery (2)
- Supratrochlear artery
- Dorsal nasal artery
Ophthalmic artery branches (10)
- Central retinal artery
- Lacrimal artery
- Ciliary artery
- Muscular branches
- Supraorbital artery
- Anterior ethmoidal artery
- Posterior ethmoidal artery
- Medial palpebral arteries
- Supratrochlear artery
- Dorsal nasal artery
Central retinal artery course
Most important branch
1. Arises in optic canal behind optic nerve
2. Enters optic nerve 1cm from eyeball
3. Passes inside it
4. Reach retina
End artery and obstruction leads to blindness
Lacrimal artery course
Largest branch
1. Arises near exit from optic canal
2. Passes along orbital lateral side
Lacrimal artery supply (2)
- Lacrimal gland
- Upper lid
Lacrimal artery branches (4)
- 2 zygomatic branches
- Recurrent meningeal branch
- Lateral palpebral arteries
Zygomatic branches course
- One reaches temporal fossa via zygomaticotemporal foramen
- Other reaches face via zygomaticofacial foramen
It gives recurrent meningeal branch
Recurrent meningeal branch course
- Passes backwards via lateral part of superior orbital fissure
- Anastomose with orbital branch of middle meningeal artery
Ends as lateral palpebral artery
Lateral palpebral artery course
- Run medial in upper and lower eyelids
- Anastomose with medial palpebral artery
Ciliary artery branches (2)
- Posterior ciliary
- Anterior ciliary
Posterior ciliary artery
- Long and short
- Pass to eyeball back
- Pierce sclera
Anterior ciliary artery
- From muscular branches
- Supply iris
Muscular branches
Supply orbital muscles
