Diencephalon Flashcards
1
Q
Site
A
- Lies between lower parts of both cerebral hemispheres above midbrain
- Surrounds 3rd ventricle
2
Q
Subdivisions
A
- Thalamus
- Metathalamus
- Subthalamus
- Hypothalamus
- Epithalamus
3
Q
Thalamus
A
- Cerebral cortex secretory
- All impulses (except smell) have to stop and synapse in thalamus before reaching cortex
4
Q
Metathalamus
A
Formed of lateral and medial geniculate bodies which are attached to lower surface of thalamus posterior part
5
Q
Subthalamus
A
- Lies directly over midbrain
- Contains motor nuclei in extrapyramidal tracts pathway from cerebral cortex to lower centers
6
Q
Hypothalamus
A
- Lies in front of Subthalamus
- Contains certain autonomic nuclei
7
Q
Epithalamus
A
Formed of:
1. 2 Habenular nuclei (trigones)
2. Habenular commissure
3. Pineal body
Relay station on descending pathways from cerebral hemispheres smell centers to midbrain tegmentum
