Origin
Right: in neck
From brachiocephalic artery behind right sternoclavicular joint
Left: in thorax
From aortic arch behind manubrium sterni
Course
Ascends in carotid sheath medial to IJV and vagus nerve
Termination
At upper border thyroid cartilage (disc between C3 and C4) by dividing into ICA and ECA
Surface anatomy of carotids
- Line from sternoclavicular joint to point midway between mandible angle and mastoid process
- This line represents CCA and ICA point in this line corresponding to thyroid cartilage upper border is junction between them
Relations: anterior
Muscles:
1. Infrahyoid
2. Sternomastoid
Gland:
1. Thyroid lobe
Relations: posterior
Muscles:
1. Cervical vertebrae muscle
2. Prevertebral muscles
Arteries:
1. Inferior thyroid artery
2. Vertebral artery
Nerves:
1. Sympathetic trunk
2. Right recurrent laryngeal nerve
Relations: medial
Above:
1. Larynx
2. Pharynx
Below:
1. Trachea
2. Esophagus
With laryngeal nerve in between
Relations: lateral
