Internal structure
- Grey matter (cerebral cortex)
- White matter
- Basal nuclei (basal ganglia)
- Lateral ventricle
Grey matter
- Formed of millions of cell bodies of neurons lying on hemisphere surface
- Shows elevated areas (gyri) separated by grooves (sulci) to increase cortex surface area within cranial cavity limited space
White matter
- Formed of myelinated nerve fibers which are axons of neurons
- Lies inside to grey matter in contrast to spinal cord
Basal nuclei
Masses of gray matter situated within white matter near hemisphere base
Lateral ventricle
Cavity lying inside cerebral hemisphere
