Infrahyoid muscles
- 4 strap muscles on each side of neck midline below hyoid
- Lie deep to skin, superficial fascia (containing Platysma), and deep fascia
- They cover larynx (thyroid and circoid cartilages), trachea, and thyroid gland
Arranged as
2 superficial:
1. Medial:
Sternohyoid
2. Lateral:
Superior belly omohyoid
2 deep:
1. Below oblique line: Sternothyroid
2. Above oblique line:
Thyrohyoid
Sternohyoid
May be absent or double
Nerve supply all muscles
Ansa cervicalis except thyrohyoid (C1, via hypoglossal nerve)
Action all muscles
Depression hyoid and thyroid cartilage during swallowing
Origin
Posterior surface of manubrium and medial end clavicle
Sternohyoid insertion
Lower border hyoid body
Omohyoid origin
- Inferior belly: Suprascapular notch and ligament
- Superior belly: intermediate tendon omohyoid
Omohyoid insertion
- Inferior belly: intermediate tendon omohyoid
- Superior belly: hyoid body lateral to Sternohyoid
Intermediate tendons is attached to to clavicle medial end by fibrous sling
Sternothyroid
- Deep
- Partly medial to Sternohyoid
Sternothyroid origin
Posterior aspect manubrium and 1 costal cartilage
Sternothyroid insertion
Oblique line thyroid cartilage
Thyrohyoid
Oblique line thyroid cartilage
Thyrohyoid insertion
Body and greater horn hyoid
