Medulla
Olfactory nerve
Consists of 20 filaments arising from olfactory bipolar cells of olfactory mucosa to reach olfactory bulb
Optic
Arises from ganglion cells of retina and joins anterolateral angle of optic chiasma (2nd order neuron of vision)
Oculomotor
Emerges on medial aspect of cerebral peduncle
Trochlear nerve
Smallest
Emerges from midbrain below tectum and it is the only cranial nerve attached to brain stem dorsal surface
Trigeminal nerve
Attached to pons lateral side (at junction of pons with MCP)
Abducent
Emerges anterior from ponto-medullary junction
Facial and vestibulochlear nerves
Emerge at pontomedullary junction near MCP
Glossopharyngeal, vagus, and cranial root of accessory nerves
Arises from posterolateral sulcus of medulla
Spinal part of accessory nerve arises from spinal cord upper 5 segments
Hypoglossal nerve
Arises from anterolateral sulcus of medulla
