1. Short trunk from posterior surface of 2 part subclavian artery
2. Passes backwards over lung apex and divides into:
   - deep cervical artery
   - superior intercostal artery

Ascends between neck back muscles to anastomose with descending branch of occipital artery with 3rd part vertebral artery

Descends in front of 1st rib neck and ends by giving upper 2 posterior intercostal arteries
