Spinal Cord: Vertebral Levels Of Spinal Cord Segments Flashcards
Spinal cord segments are present higher than their corresponding vertebrae
- Cervical region
- Upper thoracic region
- Lower thoracic region
- T11 spine
- T12 and L1 spine
Cervical region
Add one to spine
C5 spine opposite to C6
Upper thoracic region
Add 2 to spine
T3 spine opposite to T5 segment
Lower thoracic region
Add 3 to spine
T10 spine opposite to L1 segment
T11 spine
Opposite to L2 to L5 segments
T12 and L1 spine
Opposite to all sacral segments
Cervical nerves from C1 to C7
Emerge above its corresponding vertebra:
1. C1 nerve emerges above atlas
2. C8 nerve emerges above T1
Remaining spinal nerves from T1
Emerge below corresponding vertebra
Cauda equine
Gap in length between spinal cord and vertebral canal results in gradual lengthening of lumbar and sacral nerve roots which have to descend downwards to reach their exit foramina as leash of fibers “cauda equine”
