Lateral Ventricle Flashcards
Site
Cavity of cerebral hemisphere (2 lateral ventricles, one on each side of the hemisphere) lined by cubical epithelium (ependyma)
Communications
Communicates with 3rd ventricle through interventricular foramen of monro
Shape
Elongated crescentric cavity
Parts
- Body (central part)
- 3 horns:
- anterior
- posterior
- inferior
Central part body site
- Extends from interventricular foramen to corpus callosum splenium
- Lies in parietal lobe
Anterior horn site
- Part in front of interventricular foramen
- Passes forwards and lateral into frontal lobe
Posterior horn site
- Begins at corpus callosum splenium
- Runs backwards and medial into occipital lobe
Inferior horn site
- Direct continuation of body
- Passes downwards and lateral round thalamus posterior end, the forwards and medial into temporal lobe as far as uncus
Collateral trigone
Meeting of body posterior end posterior and inferior horns
Anterior horn shape
Triangular in coronal section
Anterior horn: anterior wall
Limit
Corpus callosum genu
Anterior horn: roof
Anterior part of corpus callosum body
Anterior horn: medial wall
Anterior part of septum pellucidum (above) and fornix body (below and behind)
Anterior horn: lateral wall and floor
- Caudate head
- Upper surface of corpus callosum rostrum
Central part: roof
Posterior part of corpus callosum body
Central part: medial wall
Posterior part of septum pellucidum
Central body: floor from lateral to medial
- Caudate body: arches above and lateral to thalamus with stria terminalis and thalamo-striate vein in between
- Lateral part thalamus dorsal (upper) surface
- Lateral ventricle choroid plexus
- Fornix body: arches above medial part of thalamus dorsal (upper) surface separating it from lateral ventricle floor
Posterior horn: roof and lateral wall
Corpus callosum tapetum lateral to which runs optic radiation fibers
Posterior horn: medial wall
Sloping and shows 2 parallel elevations:
1. Posterior horn bulb (above)
2. Calcarine avis (below)
Inferior horn: roof
- Caudate tail: passing forwards to end in amygdaloid nucleus
- Stria terminalis: amygdaloid nucleus efferent runs backwards along caudate tail medial edge
Inferior horn: lateral
Formed by tapetum
Inferior horn: floor from medial to lateral
- Fimbria (axons of hippocampus cells)
- Hippocampus: anterior end (below amygdaloid nucleus) is expanded to form pes hippocampi
- Collateral eminence: slight elevation formed by collateral sulcus
Inferior horn: medial wall
Occupied by choroid fissure lower part through which choroid plexus (branch from anterior choroidal artery) enters infrerior horn
Choroid plexus of lateral ventricle: body
Derived from posterior choroidal artery
Choroid plexus of lateral ventricle: inferior horn
Derived from anterior choroidal artery
