Glossopharyngeal Nerve Flashcards
Glossopharyngeal nerve
9th cranial nerve
Origin
A mixed nerve arising from medulla by 4 nuclei:
1. Motor
2. 2 sensory
3. Parasympathetic
Motor
Nucleus ambiguous
Parasympathetic
Inferior salivary
2 sensory
- Nucleus solitaries (taste)
- Spinal nucleus of Trigeminal (general)
Course
- Leaves skull through jugular foramen
- Descend inside carotid sheath between ICA and IJV
- Leaves sheath by passing forwards with Stylopharyngeus between ICA and ECA
- Enters pharynx between superior and middle constrictors (end gap)
- Passes deep to Hyoglossus and divides into branches
Upper part carries superior and inferior ganglia
Branches
- Motor
- Tympanic branch
- Sensory
- carotid
- tonsillar
- pharyngeal
- lingual
Motor
Stylopharyngeus muscle
Tympanic branch
Parasympathetic and sensory
1. It enters tympanic cavity
2. Unite with carotico-tympanic sympathetic fibers
3. Form tympanic plexus
Tympanic branch supply
Supplies:
1. Middle ear mucosa
2. Auditory tube
3. Mastoid antrum
4. Parotid
Via lesser superficial petrosal nerve
Carotid
- Carotid sinus
- Carotid body
Tonsillar
- Palatine tonsil
- Soft palate
Pharyngeal
2-3 branches
Unite with pharyngeal branches of vagus and superior cervical sympathetic ganglion forming pharyngeal plexus
Pharyngeal supply
Oropharynx mucosa
Lingual
Posterior 1/3 tongue (general and taste sensations)
