Vertebrobasilar System: Vertebral Artery Flashcards
Origin
Neck root, from subclavian artery part 1
Course of 4th part
- Vertebral arteries enter skull through foramen magnum
- Run upwards, forwards, and medial on medulla anterior surface
End
At pons lower border where both arteries unite together forming basilar artery
Branches
- Posterior inferior cerebellar artery
- Posterior spinal artery
- Anterior spinal artery
- Medullary branches
Largest branch
Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (large name too :(
Posterior inferior cerebellar artery course
- Runs backwards around medulla just below olive
- Turns around ICP
- Reach cerebellum inferior surface
Posterior inferior cerebellar artery supply
- Posterior part of cerebellum inferior surface
- Hemisphere inferior vermis
- Medulla dorsolateral zone including:
- ICP
- 4th ventricle choroid plexus
- usually gives posterior spinal artery
Posterior inferior cerebellar artery occlusion
Lateral medullary syndrome
Posterior spinal artery origin
- Vertebral artery
Or - PICA branch
Posterior spinal artery course
Descends to spinal cord along spinal nerves posterior roots
Posterior spinal artery supplies
- Spinal cord posterior 1/3
- Gracile nuclei
- Cuneate nuclei
Anterior spinal artery origin
2 anterior spinal arteries run obliquely downwards and medial in front of medulla and unite forming a single anterior spinal artery
Anterior spinal artery course
Descend along spinal cord anterior median sulcus down to filum terminale
Anterior spinal artery supply
- Spinal cord anterior 2/3
- Medulla medial zone
Anterior spinal artery occlusion
Medial medullary syndrome
