Spinal Cord: Coverings (Spinal Meninges) Flashcards
Spinal meninges
Spinal cord is surrounded by 3 meninges:
1. Pia
2. Arachnoid
3. Dura
Inside outwards
Pia matter
Delicate membrane adherent to spinal cord
Pia matter attachment: above
It is continuous through foramen magnum with pia matter of brain
Pia matter attachment: below
Ends at tip of conus
Pia matter attachment: towards
Sends sheaths around spinal nerve roots
Pia matter attachment: inwards
Sends sheath around spinal blood vessels
Pia matter bands (4)
- Linea splendens
- Subarachnoid septum
- Filum terminale
- Denticulate ligaments
Linea spendens
Median glistening pia mater band extending along anterior median fissure
Subarachnoid septum
Backward pia mater extension at posterior median sulcus to attach dura mater
Filum terminale
- Slivery glistening pia mater fibrous band extending downwards from tip of conus medullaris among cauda equine
- At level of S2 vertebra it pierces arachnoid and dura, acquires a Dural investment to attach to coccyx back
Denticulate ligaments
- 2 pia mater lateral bands, piercing arachnoid to attach to dura mater
- Its lateral edge is serrated and has 21 processes
- It extends from foramen magnum to L1 vertebra lying midway between ventral and dorsal spinal nerve roots
Arachnoid mater
Delicate membrane between pia and dura maters
Arachnoid mater attachment: above
It is continuous through foramen magnum with arachnoid mater of brain
Arachnoid mater attachment: below
Ends at S2 vertebra
Arachnoid mater spaces
- Subarachnoid space
- Subdural space
Subarachnoid space site
Between arachnoid and pia maters
Subarachnoid space contents
- CSF
- Spinal nerve roots
- Spinal blood vessels
Lumbar cistern site
Lower part of spinal sub-arachnoid space (devoid of spinal cord) extending from L2-S2
Lumbar cistern content
- CSF
- Cauda equine
- Filum terminale
Important site for lumbar puncture
Lumbar cistern
Lumbar puncture
- A needle is introduced in subarachnoid space to obtain CSF sample or to inject drug
- Done below L2 to avoid spinal cord injury, cauda nerves are not liable to be injured by needle being floating in CSF
Subdural space site
Between arachnoid and dura maters
Contains thin film of serous fluid
Dura mater
Thick fibrous tough outermost membrane
Dura mater attachment: above
It is attached to margins of foramen magnum
Dura mater attachment: below
It ends as S2 vertebra
Dura mater attachment: outwards
It sends sheaths around spinal nerve roots and trunk (in intervertebral foramina), around Filum terminale
Dura mater spaces
- Subdural space
- Epidural (extra-Dural) space
Subdural space site and contents
- Between dura and arachnoid maters
- Contains thin film of serous fluid
Epidural space site
Between dura mater and vertebral canal periosteum
Epidural content
- Loose areolar tissue
- Fat
- Internal vertebral vein plexus
- Spinal nerve roots
