Nose: Maxillary Sinus Flashcards
1
Q
Site
A
- Largest
- Only one present at birth
- Pyramidal
- Occupies whole maxilla body
2
Q
Relations
A
- Apex
- Base
- Roof
- Floor
- Anterior wall
- Posterior wall
3
Q
Apex
A
Towards zygomatic bone (lateral)
4
Q
Base
A
Towards nasal cavity (medial)
5
Q
Roof
A
Floor of orbit (infra-orbital groove and canal) containing Infraorbital nerve and vessels
6
Q
Floor
A
- Alveolar process of maxilla (1cm below nose floor, opposite 2nd premolar and 1st molar)
- Damage of floor during these teeth extraction leads to oroantral fistula
7
Q
Anterior wall
A
Subcutaneous containing anterior superior nerve and vessels
8
Q
Posterior wall
A
- Separates sinus from Pterygopalatine fossa
- Pierced by posterior superior alveolar nerve and vessels
9
Q
Opening
A
- Large and rounded (2 cm)
- In upper part of base
- It opens in middle meatus at posterior end of hiatus semilunaris (accessory small openings are usually present behind main opening)
- Its higher position makes drainage of any collection of pus or blood very hard
10
Q
Vessels and nerves related
A
- In roof (Infraorbital groove and canal)
- In anterior wall
- In lateral wall
- In posterior wall
- Behind sinus
11
Q
In roof
A

12
Q
In anterior wall
A
Anterior superior alveolar (Infraorbital nerve and vessels)
13
Q
In lateral wall
A
Middle superior alveolar (Infraorbital nerve and vessels)
14
Q
In posterior wall
A
Posterior superior alveolar (maxillary nerve and vessels)
15
Q
Behind sinus
A
Greater palatine
(Maxillary nerve and vessels)
Supply posterior wall
