Muscles Of Mustication Flashcards
What are the muscles of Mastication?
- Temporalis
- Masseter
- Lateral Pterygoid
- Medial Pterygoid
Temporalis fibers
Fan Shaped:
Anterior fibers: vertical
Middle fibers: oblique
Posterior fibers: horizontal
Temporalis Origin
- Temporal Fossa
- Inferior Temporal Line
- Temporal Fascia
Temporalis insertion
- Tip and medial surface coronoid surface.
- Anterior border of mandible ramus.
Temporalis nerve supply
2 deep temporal nerves coming from the anterior division of mandibular nerve.
Temporalis Action
- Elevation (anterior fibers)
- Retraction (posterior fibers)
Masseter fibers
- Superficial fibers: oblique.
- Deep fibers: vertical.
Masseter origin
- Superficial fibers: lower border of zygomatic arch.
- Deep fibers: deep surface of zygomatic arch.
Masseter insertion
Lateral surface of mandible ramus.
Masseter nerve supply
Masseteric nerve (anterior division of mandibular nerve)
Masseter action
- Protraction mandible: superficial fibers.
- Elevation mandible: deep fibers.
Lateral Pterygoid origin
- Upper head:
Infra-temporal surface and crest of greater wing sphenoid. - Lower head:
Lateral surface of lateral Pterygoid plate.
Lateral Pterygoid insertion
- Pterygoid fovea of mandible neck.
- Capsule and articular disc of temporomandibular joint.
Lateral Pterygoid nerve supply
Nerve to lateral Pterygoid (anterior division of mandibular nerve.
Lateral Pterygoid action
- Depression mandible: lateral Pterygoids both sides.
- Protraction mandible to opposite side: lateral and medial Pterygoids one side.
- Side to side movements lateral and medial Pterygoids of both sides alternatively.
Medial Pterygoid origin
- Superficial head: maxillary tuberosity.
- Deep head: medial surface of lateral Pterygoid plate.
Medial Pterygoid insertion
Medial surface of angle and ramus of mandible below mandibular foramen.
Medial Pterygoid nerve supply
Nerve to medial Pterygoid (main trunk of mandibular nerve).
Medial Pterygoid action
- Elevation mandible: medial Pterygoids both sides.
- Protraction mandible to opposite side: lateral and medial Pterygoids one side
- Side to side movement: lateral and medial Pterygoids of both sides alternatively.
