Brainstem: Pons Flashcards
Definition and size
Middle part of brain stem
1 inch long
Lying between medulla and midbrain
Parts
2 parts
1. Ventral: (basis pontis)
2. Dorsal (tegmentum)
External features (surfaces)
- Ventrellar (basilar) surface
- Dorsal (tegmental) surface
Ventral surface contents
- Basilar groove
- Transverse pontine fibers
- Exit of middle 4 cranial nerves
Basilar groove
Median shallow groove lodging basilar artery
Transverse pontine fibers
Thick ridges which collect on each side forming middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) which connects pons to cerebellum
Exit of middle 4 cranial nerves
- Trigeminal (5th cranial) nerve
- Abducent (6th cranial) nerve
- Facial (7th cranial) nerve
- Vesticulocochlear (8th cranial) nerve
Trigeminal (5th cranial) nerve
Emerges by large lateral sensory and small medial motor roots from lateral part of front pons close to its upper border
Abducent nerve
Emerges from sulcus between pyramid and pons
Facial and vesitebulocochlear nerve
Emerge from cerebellopontine angle
Dorsal surface
Forms upper 1/2 of 4th ventricle floor separated from back of open medulla by medullary stria and bounded lateral by SCP
Dorsal surface contents
- Medial eminence and facial colliculus
- Sulcus limitans
- Upper vestibular area
Medial eminence and facial colliculus
At medial eminence lower end produced by abducent nucleus and encircling facial nerve fibers
Sulcus limitans
Lateral to medial eminence, its lower part lies lateral to facial colliculus and is called superior fovea
Upper vestibular area
Overlies superior and lateral vestibular nuclei
