Eyeball Development: Lens Flashcards
1
Q
Formation
A
- Formed on surface as ectodermal thickening called lens placode
- Induced by optic vesicle
- Placode is then converted into lens vesicle which sinks into underlying mesoderm where it is surrounded by optic cup margin
2
Q
Cells of lens development
A
- Posterior wall differentiate to form primary lens fibers
- Elongation of these cells transforms posterior wall into rounded lens body, obliterating lens vesicle cavity
3
Q
Primary lens fibers
A
Augmented by new population of secondary lens fibers which arise from simple epithelium that differentiates from cells of lens vesicles anterior wall
4
Q
Fetal life lens capsule
A
Supplied by hyaloid artery but after birth artery degenerates and lens becomes avascular
5
