Joints Of Atlas And Axis: Atlanto-Occipital Joints Flashcards
Joints Of Atlas And Axis
- Atlanto-occipital joints
- Atlanto-axial joints
Type
Synovial, ellipsoid variety
Articular surface
- Above: occipital condyles
- Below: superior articular facets of atlas
Capsule
Attached to articular surfaces margins
Ligaments
No ligaments but anterior and posterior Atlanto-occipital membranes are attached to capsule and strengthen it
Anterior atlanto-occipital membrane
Extends between foramen magnum anterior margin and atlas anterior arch
Posterior atlanto-occipital membrane
Extends between foramen magnum posterior margin and atlas posterior arch
Movements
- Flexion and extension (nodding)
- Slight lateral flexion
Muscles producing flexion
- Longus capitis
- Rectus capitis anterior
Muscles producing extension
- Rectus capitis posterior major and minor
- Splenius
- Semispinalis capitis
Ligaments and membranes attached to atlas
- Transverse ligament
- Cruciform ligament
- Anterior atlanto-occipital membrane
- Posterior atlanto-occipital membrane
Transverse ligaments
Extends between tubercles on medial side of lateral mass atlas and lies behind dens
Cruciform ligament
- Transverse limb
- Vertical limb
Transverse limb
Transverse ligament of atlas
Verticals limb
From middle of transverse ligament atlas and has:
1. Upper part (passes upwards to attach foramen magnum anterior edge)
2. Lower part (passes downwards to attach to back of axis body)
