Subclavian Artery Flashcards
Origin
- Right: from brachiocephalic artery behind right sternoclavicular joint
- Left: from arch of aorta behind manubrium sterni
Course
- Each artery enters neck behind sternoclavicuar joint
- Running in arched course in neck root behind scalenus anterior and in front of lung apex
Parts
Scalenus anterior divides into 3 parts:
1. 1st medial
2. 2nd deep
3. 3rd lateral to muscle
End
Ends at outer border of 1st rib by becoming Axillary artery
Surface anatomy
Convex line 1 inch above clavicle from sternoclavicular joint to midclavicular point
Relations: 1st part anterior
Medial to muscle:
Muscles:
1. Sternomastoid
2. Sternohyoid
3. Sternothyroid
Nerves:
1. Vagus and its cardiac branches
2. Sympathetic branches
3. Ansa subclavian
4. Phrenic nerve (on left side only)
Vein:
1. IJV
Thoracic duct: on left side
Relations: 1st part posterior
- Apex of lung and cervical pleura
- Supra pleural membrane
- Recurrent laryngeal nerve (on right side only)
Relations: 2nd part anterior
- Sternomastoid
- Scalenus anterior with right phrenic only
Relations: 2nd part o steroid
Deep to muscle
1. Apex of lung and cervical pleura
2. Suprapleural membrane
Relations: 3rd part
Lateral to muscles
1. Skin and fascia of posterior triangle
2. Clavicle
3. Subclavian vein and EJV
Relations: 3rd part posterior
- Brachial plexus lower trunk
- Upper surface 1st rib
1st part branches
- Vertebral artery
- Internal thoracic artery
- Thyrocervical trunk
Thyrocervical trunk divides into
- Transverse cervical artery
- Suprascapular artery
- Inferior thyroid artery
2nd part branches
Costocervical trunk divides into:
1. Deep cervical artery
2. Superior intercostal artery
3rd part branches
Usually no branches
May give descending scapular artery which replaces deep branch of transverse cervical artery
