Maxillary Nerve Flashcards
Origin
Purely sensory from trigeminal ganglion.
Intermediate in size and position in between ophthalmic and mandibular nerves.
Course in cranial cavity
- Passes forward in lateral of cavernous sinus
- Leaves middle fossa through foramen rotundum
Course in pterygopalatine fossa
- Reach pterygopalatine fossa
Course in orbit
- Pass through inferior orbital fissure (infra orbital nerve new name), infra orbital groove, infra orbital canal
Course in face
- Reach face through infra orbital foramen
- Ends by dividing into palpebral, nasal, and labial branches
Branches in cranial cavity
- Meningeal nerve
Branches in pterygopalatine fossa
- Two ganglionic nerves
- Zygomatic nerve
- Posterior superior alveolar nerve
In orbit branches
- Middle superior alveolar nerve
- Anterior superior alveolar nerve

- Leaves fossa via pterygomaxillary fissure
- Pierces back of maxilla
- Descends on maxilla
