Lymph Drainage Of Head And Neck Flashcards
Lymph drainage of head and neck
Superficial lymph nodes:
1. Vertical
2. Circular
Deep lymph nodes:
- 2 vertical groups
Superficial lymph nodes
- Submental
- Submandibular
- Buccal
- Parotid
- Mastoid
- Occipital
Vertical superficial lymph nodes
Along external and anterior jugular veins
Circular superficial lymph nodes
At junction of head and neck forming ring
Submental
- In submental triangle
Drainage: - Lower incisors
- Gum
- Tongue tip
- Mouth floor
Submandibular
On submandibular gland inferior surface
Drainage:
1. Most teeth and gum
2. Tongue sides
3. Mouth floor
4. Submandibular gland
5. Sublingual gland
6. Nasal cavity
Buccal
On Buccinator and drain cheek
Parotid
Superficial and deep
Drainage:
1. Lateral part of scalp and face
2. Middle ear
3. Upper molars
Parotid
Superficial and deep
Drainage:
1. Lateral part of scalp and face
2. Middle ear
3. Upper molars
Mastoid
On mastoid process
Drainage:
1. Back of scalp and auricle
Occipital
On uppermost part trapezius
Drainage:
1. Back scalp and neck
Superficial lymph nodes efferent
They all send their lymph to deep cervical nodes
Deep cervical lymph nodes at neck side
- From digastric muscle to neck root along IJV and deep to sternomastoid
- Divided by omohyoid intermediate tendon in 2 groups:
- upper deep cervical
- lower deep cervical
Upper deep cervical
- Contain jugulo-digastric (at point of crossing between IJV and posterior belly digastric)
- Drain tongue and tonsil
Lower deep cervical
- Contain jugulo-omohyoid (at point of crossing between IJV and inferior belly omohyoid)
- Drain tongue
