Oral Cavity: Soft Palate Flashcards
Soft palate
Soft movable fleshy fold (mucosal fold containing muscles, aponeurosis, mucous glands) attached to hard palate posterior border hanging between Nasopharynx and Oropharynx
Muscles
- Tensor palati
- Levator palati
- Palatoglossus
- Palatopharyngeus
- Musculus uvulae
Tensor palati origin
- Scaphoid fossa
- Auditory tube
- Sphenoid spine
Tensor palati insertion
It’s tendon hooks around pterygoid hamulus to be expanded forming palatine aponeurosis attached to posterior border and inferior surface hard palate
Tensor palati action
Makes soft palate tense
Levator palati origin
- Petrous bone (in front of carotid canal)
- Auditory tube
Levator palati insertion
Palatine aponeurosis
Levator palati action
Elevates soft palate
Palatoglossus origin
Lower surface palatine aponeurosis
Palatoglossus insertion
Side tongue posterior part
Palatoglossus action
Elevates tongue and closes oropharyngeal isthmus
Palatopharyngeus origin
Upper surface palatine aponeurosis
Palatopharyngeus insertion
Thyroid cartilage posterior border
Palatopharyngeus action
Elevates and shortens pharynx
Musculus uvulae origin
- Posterior nasal spine
- Palatine aponeurosis
