- Air filled spaces in skull bones around nose (formed by absorption of spongy bony present between inner and outer tables of skull bones) lined with mucous membrane continuous with that of nose
- Open in lateral wall nasal cavity by special foramina

Absent at birth (except maxillary sinus) showing marked growth at time of permanent teeth eruption
