Joints Of Atlas And Axis: Atlanto-Axial Joints Flashcards
1
Q
Atlanto-Axial joints
A
- Two lateral atlanto-axial joints
- Median atlanto-axial joint
2
Q
Two lateral atlanto-axial joints
A
- Synovial plane joints
- Between inferior articular facets of lateral masses atlas and superior facets on upper surface of axis body
- Each has thin capsule attached around articular surfaces
3
Q
Median atlanto-axial joint
A
- Synovial pivot joint
- Between axis odontoid process and osseoligamentous ring formed by atlas arch and transverse ligament of atlas
4
Q
Movements
A
Rotation of atlas with skull round axis odontoid process
5
Q
Ligaments connecting axis with occipital bone
A
- Membrana tectoria
- Alar ligaments
- Apical ligament
6
Q
Membrana tectoria
A
- Upward continuation of posterior longitudinal ligament of vertebral column
- Extend from back of axis body to upper surface of occipital bone basilar part in front of foramen magnum
- It is broad membrane covering odontoid process, cruciform, and alar ligaments
7
Q
Alar ligaments
A
2 strong fibrous cords extending from sides of upper part odontoid process to occipital condyles medial sides
8
Q
Apical ligament
A
Short ligament extending from odontoid process tip to foramen magnum anterior margin
