Eyeball Flashcards
Eyeball site
Embedded in orbital fat but separated from it by facial sheath called ocular fascia (tenon’s capsule)
Ocular fascia site
- Extends from optic nerve attachment up TO corneoscleral junction
- It is thickened around medial and lateral recti tendons and attached to corresponding bones of orbit forming medial and lateral check ligaments
Suspensory ligament
Fibrous tissue passing between check ligaments
It carries the eyeball
Eyeball wall is made of 3 coats
- Outer coat
- Middle coat
- Inner nervous coat (retina)
Outer coat contents (2)
- Cornea
- Sclera
Cornea
Transparent anterior part
Sclera
Opaque
Formed by dense white fibrous tissue
Middle coat parts posterior to anterior (3)
Vascular and pigmented
1. Choroid
2. Ciliary body
3. Iris
Choroid
- Black membrane
- Vascular
- Highly pigmented
Ciliary body contents
- Ciliary ring
- Ciliary processes
- Ciliary muscle
Ciliary ring
Shows ridges which are radially arranged
Ciliary processes
Deep to ciliary muscles and attached to ciliary ring
Ciliary muscle
Form muscular ring around iris
Ciliary muscle contents
Two parts of smooth muscle fibers
Direction of fibers in ciliary muscle
- Meridional
- Circular
Site of fibers in ciliary muscle
- Extend from sclera TO ciliary processes
When muscle contracts, it pulls on the processes so which relaxes suspensory ligament of the lens, lens becomes more convex.
Main muscle for accommodation
Ciliary muscle
Iris shape and site
- Circular diaphragm between cornea and lens
- Perforated at center by pupil
- Pigmented
- Contains circular and radial muscle fibers (involuntary)
- Circular part forms sphincter pupillae
- Radial part forms dilator pupillae
Circular part iris supply
Parasympathetic fibers
Radial part iris supply
Sympathetic fibers
Anterior chamber of iris
Space between iris and cornea
Posterior chamber of iris
Space between iris and lens
Inner nervous coat (retina) consists of (2)
- Outer pigmented part
- Inner nervous part
Optic nerve origin in Inner nervous coat (retina)
Ganglionic layer
Optic nerve then pierces eyeball posterior pole
Eyeball cavity contents (3)
- Aqueous humor
- Vitreous body
- Lens
Aqueous humor
- Fluid secreted from vessels of iris and ciliary body
- Fills anterior and posterior chambers
Vitreous body
- Transparent colorless jelly-like substance filling eyeball posterior 5/6
- Enveloped by hyaloid membrane
Lens
- Transparent biconvex
- Situated in between iris (front) and vitreous body (behind)
- Surrounded by capsule attached to Suspensory ligament of lens keeping it in place
Eyeball vessels: arteries (2)
Branches from ophthalmic artery
1. Ciliary artery
2. Central retina artery
Ciliary artery (3)
- Anterior ciliary artery
- Long posterior ciliary artery
- Short posterior ciliary artery
Eyeball vessels: veins
Drain into ophthalmic veins
1. Choroid veins
2. Ciliary veins
Choroid veins
Have special arrangements
End in single trunk piercing sclera
Ciliary veins
Accompany anterior ciliary arteries
