Meninges: Arachnoid Mater Flashcards
Arachnoid mater
- Thin and delicate membrane 2. Between pia and dura maters
- Bridges over sulci on brain surface
Subarachnoid space
Space between pia and arachnoid maters
Subarachnoid space contents
1.CSF
2. Brain blood vessels
Subarachnoid space is crossed by
Fine fibers reticulum which connect pia and arachnoid, keeping subarachnoid space narrow
Subarachnoid cisterns
In certain situations, reticulum is much reduced and both membranes are widely separated leading to subarachnoid widening
Subarachnoid cisterns
- Cerbellomedullary cistern (cisterna magna)
- Pontine (pinto-medullary) cistern
- Interpeduncular cistern
- Lateral fissure cistern
- Corpus callosum cistern
- Chiasmatic cistern
Cisterna magna
Lies in cerebellum and lower half of 4th ventricle roof high opens up into cistern by magendie median aperture for CSF drainage
Pontine cistern
Lies in front of pons and medulla
Pontine cistern contents
- Vertebral artery
- Basilar artery
Pontine cistern is transversed by
Lower 8 cranial nerve roots
Pontine cistern CSF drainage
4th ventricle open into it by luschka lateral apertures
Interpeduncular cistern
Lies in interpeduncular fossa
Interpeduncular cistern content
Arteries forming circulus arteriosus
Interpeduncular cistern transversed by
3rd and 4th cranial nerve roots
Lateral fissure cistern
Interpeduncular cistern extension into lateral fissure main stem
