Internal Carotid System Flashcards
1
Q
Origin
A
In neck as one of 2 terminal branches of common carotid artery CCA, opposite disc between C3 and C4
2
Q
Course
A
- Enters skull through carotid canal
- Reach cavernous sinus
- Leaves cavernous sinus
- Pierce dura and arachnoid maters
- Reach subarachnoid space in Interpeduncular cistern
3
Q
Branches and supply
A
- Ophthalmic artery: orbit
- Posterior communicating artery join posterior cerebral artery sharing in circulus arteriosus formation
- Anterior choroidal artery
- Anterior cerebral artery
- Middle cerebral artery
4
Q
End
A
Terminates below anterior perforated substance by dividing into 2 terminal branches:
1. Anterior cerebral artery (small)
2. Middle cerebral artery (large and nearly in direct line with ICA main trunk)
5
Q
Anterior choroidal artery course
A
Passes backwards along optic tract around cerebral peduncle lateral surface as far as lateral geniculate body
6
Q
Anterior choroidal artery end
A
By entering lateral ventricle inferior horn (in its medial wall) through choroidal fissure lower part
7
Q
Anterior choroidal artery supply
A
- Optic tract
- Lateral geniculate body
- Choroid plexus
- Internal capsule:
- Posterior part of posterior limb part
- Retrolentiform part
- Sublentiform part
