Congenital Anomalies Of Face And Palate Flashcards
Congenital anomalies
- Oblique facial cleft
- Cleft lip (hare lip)
- Cleft palate
Oblique facial cleft
- Cleft lip extending a.omg nose side till eyelid medial
- Results from failure of fusion between maxillary prominence, frontonasal prominence side (lateral nasal fold), and intermaxillary segment
Cleft lip
- Unilateral cleft lip
- Bilateral cleft lip
- Median cleft lip
Unilateral cleft lip
Failure of fusion between maxillary prominence and intermaxillary segment on one side only
Bilateral cleft lip
Failure of fusion between maxillary prominence and intermaxillary segment in both sides
Median cleft lip
- Due to defective formation of intermaxillary segment
- Associated with failure of formation of upper jaw part carrying incisors and primary palate
Cleft palate
Due to failure of fusion between palate different segments
1. Complete cleft palate:
- bilateral
- unilateral cleft
2. Partial cleft palate
- anterior
-posterior
Unilateral complete cleft palate
Cleft runs between 2 palatine shelves then extends between primary and on secondary palate
Bilateral complete cleft palate
Cleft between 2 palatine shelves extends anterior in a V shaped manner separating primary palate from the 2 secondary palates
Anterior partial cleft palate
Cleft between primary and secondary palate may be unilateral or bilateral
Posterior partial cleft palate
- Cleft between 2 secondary palates posterior to incisive fossa
- Could be limited to uvula forming bifid uvula
