Pharynx: Constrictor Muscles Flashcards
Constrictor muscles
- Superior constrictor muscle
- Middle constrictor muscle
- Inferior constrictor muscle
Superior constrictor origin
- Pterygoid Hamulus
- Mylohyoid line posterior end
- Pterygomandibular raphe
Superior constrictor insertion
Median fibrous raphe (from pharyngeal tubercle in midline of pharynx posterior wall)
Middle constrictor origin
- Stylohyoid ligament (lower end)
- Lesser and greater horns hyoid
Middle constrictor insertion
Median fibrous raphe (overlapping superior constrictor)
Inferior constrictor origin
- Thyropharyngeus part
Oblique: oblique line and inferior horn thyroid cartilage - Cricopharyngeus part
Horizontal: side cricoid cartilage
Inferior constrictor insertion
Median fibrous raphe (upper fibers overlap middle constrictor)
Constrictor muscles nerve supply
Pharyngeal plexus (cranial root accessory via pharyngeal branch vagus)
Inferior constrictor receives additional supply from external and recurrent laryngeal nerves
Constrictor muscles action
Pharynx constriction
Gaps in lateral wall
4 gaps
1st gap
Above superior constrictor
1. Tensor palati
2. Ascending palatine artery
3. Levator palati
4. Auditory tube
These structures pierce pharyngobasilar fascia
2nd gap
Between superior and middle constrictors
1. Stylopharyngeus muscle
2. Glossopharyngeal nerve
3rd gap
Between middle and inferior constrictors
1. Superior laryngeal artery
2. Internal laryngeal nerve
These structures pierce thyrohyoid membrane
4th gap
Below inferior constrictor
1. Inferior laryngeal artery
2. Recurrent laryngeal nerve
