Ciliary Ganglion Flashcards
Type
Parasympathetic
Site
Lies near orbital apex between optic nerve and lateral rectus
It is suspended from Nasociliary nerve
Roots (3)
- Sensory root
- Sympathetic root
- Parasympathetic root
Sensory root
Nasociliary nerve
Sympathetic root
From sympathetic plexus around ICA
Parasympathetic root
Oculomotor nerve through nerve to inferior oblique
Branches definition
12-15 short ciliary nerves
Pierce eyeball back around optic nerve
Branches
- Sensory fibers
- Sympathetic fibers
- Parasympathetic postganglionic fibers
Sensory fibers
Carry eyeball sensation
Sympathetic fibers supply (2)
- Dilator pupillae
- Eyeball blood vessels
Parasympathetic postganglionic fibers supply (2)
- Ciliary muscle
- Sphincter pupillae muscle
Trochlear (4th cranial) nerve deep origin
Trochlear motor nucleas in midbrain
Trochlear (4th cranial) nerve superficial attachment and exit from brain
Back of midbrain (right nerve comes from left nucleus and vice versa)
Trochlear (4th cranial) nerve course and end
- Curves forwards round midbrain (cerebral peduncle)
- Passes between posterior cerebral and superior cerebellar arteries
- Pierces dura at decussation point between Tentorium free and attached borders
- It passes in cavernous sinus lateral wall
- Enters orbit via superficial orbital fissure
Trochlear (4th cranial) nerve branches
Supplies superior oblique muscle
