A man walked into an alley.
Era de noche.
It was nighttime.
Se acercó (andando) a tres hombres.
He walked up to three men.
Les enseñó algo que llevaba en una caja.
He showed them something he was carrying in a box.
Los tres miraron en la caja.
The three looked into the box.
¿Qué es lo que buscaban?
What were they looking for?
Buscaban un brazo.
They were looking for an arm.
¿Por qué me cuentas historias como esa?
Why do you tell me stories like that?
Creía que te gustaban.
I thought you liked them.
Me ponen los pelos de punta.
They make my hair stand on end.
Hablemos de cosas más agradables.
Let’s talk about nicer things.
Pero primero termina el relato.
But first finish the story.
Para resumirlo, se trataba de un médico.
To sum it up, it was about a doctor.
El que llevaba la caja era médico.
The one carrying the box was a doctor.
Dos días antes se había cortado el brazo.
Two days before he had cut off his arm.
Fue a enseñárselo a los tres hombres.
He went to show it to the three men.
Así cumplía una promesa.
In that way he fulfilled a promise.

The four men knew each other.

They met on a ship that sank.
