NEOPLASIA BASICS TERMS Flashcards
neoplasia equals?
new growth
Abnormal mass of tissue whose growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with that of
the normal tissues
Neoplasm
made up of transformed
neoplastic cells
Parenchyma
connective tissue, blood
vessels, and lymphatics
Supporting stroma
– It will remain localized
– Amenable to local surgical removal
Benign Neoplasms
Implies that the lesion can invade and destroy adjacent structures and spread to distant sites (metastasize) to cause death
Malignant Neoplasms
arising from epithelial tissue
Carcinoma
arising from mesenchymal tissue
Sarcoma
arising from the lymphoreticular
system
Lymphoma
arising from hematopoietic
elements
Leukemia
– A mass of disorganized tissue indigenous to the particular site, such as the lung or the liver
– Considered a developmental malformation, it has chromosomal aberrations and is considered neoplastic
Hamartoma
– A congenital anomaly consisting of a heterotopic nest of cells. For example, a small nodule of well-developed and normally organized pancreatic tissue may be found in the submucosa of the stomach, duodenum, or small
intestine.
Choristoma
the extent to which
parenchymal cells of the neoplasm resemble
comparable normal cells, both
morphologically and functionally
Differentiation
lack of differentiation
Anaplasia
Disorderly growth
Encountered principally in epithelial lesions
Dysplasias do not necessarily progress to
cancer but are precursors
Dysplasia
