CNS TUMORS Flashcards
what are the CNS TUMORS?
astrocytoma
-diffuse
-pilocytic
meningiomas
about 80% of adult primary brain tumors
mutation in p53 and Rb genes and gain of function in p13k pathways
seizures, headache, focal neurologic deficits
Grading
Low grade astrocytoma
Anaplastic Astrocytoma
Glioblastoma Multiforme
what is this astrocytoma, a CNS TUMOR?
Diffuse Astrocytoma
what is this astrocytoma, a CNS TUMOR??
a tumor in kids and teens/young adults
Found in cerebellum – cystic lesions w/ mural nodules, and Rosenthal fibers
Usually benign; (behaves in a benign fashion in the majority of cases)
Pilocytic Astrocytoma
usually benign (slow-growing) adult tumor
Attached to the dura – arise from meningothelial cells of arachnoid
Compress the underlying brain
Among the varied histologic patterns are
syncytial fibroblastic transitional psammomatous secretory
what tumor is this?
Meningiomas
this tumor is diffuse or pilocytic?
astrocytoma
where is diffuse astrocytoma found?
cerebral hemispheres
major cause of diffuse astrocytoma?
p53 and Rb genes
grading of diffuse astrocytoma is based on?
degree of differentiation
low grade astrocytoma
anapestic astrocytoma
glioblastoma multiforme
where are pilocytic astrocytoma found?
benign or malignant
cerebellum
benign
meningiomas are benign or malignant?
benign
major histologic pattens of meningiomas?
syncytial fibroblastic transitional psammomatous secretory
