Poultry Flash - Infectious Coryza Flashcards
what are the only animals affected by infectious coryza?
chickens - most severe in young adults with high morbidity
what is the classic case presentation of infectious coryza?
depression, inappetence, sneezing, conjunctivitis with adherence of eyelids, swollen infraorbital sinuses, facial edema
pneumonia & air sacculitis if complicated with secondary infection
what is seen at necropsy from an animal with infectious coryza?
catarrhal or necrotizing sinusitis (infraorbital sinus contains caseous exudate), fibrinosuppurative conjunctivitis, & facial edema
what is seen on microscopic exam of sinus exudates from chickens with infectious coryza? what about culture?
gram stain negative bipolar rod with a tendency to form filaments
microaerophilic, grows on blood agar, but requires nurse colony of s. aureus to secrete v-factor, & is catalase negative
what tests are used to diagnose infectious coryza?
serology - hemagglutination inhibition & immunodiffusion tests
PCR
how is infectious coryza treated?
supportive care & abx
how is infectious coryza prevented?
depopulate carriers, vaccination, strict biosecurity & sanitation protocols
how is infectious coryza transmitted?
direct contact, fomites, airborne, & contaminated food/water
what animals serve as reservoirs for infectious coryza?
chronically ill/healthy carrier birds
what is the causative agent of infectious coryza?
avibacterium (haemophilus) paragallinarum - microaerophilic gram negative bipolar rod that forms filaments
