what is the classic case presentation of a dog with pancreatitis?
any dog that is older & overweight
presenting with anorexia, vomiting, weakness, abdominal pain, dehydration, fever, diarrhea, icterus, & shock
what are some examples of causes of pancreatitis in dogs?
dietary indiscretion, pancreatic hypoperfusion (anesthetic event), abdominal trauma, pharmaceuticals, & metabolic lipid disorders
what are the tests of choice for diagnosing pancreatitis in dogs?
snap cPL to quickly rule out pancreatitis
spec cPL assay is the TEST OF CHOICE
abdominal ultrasound - highly specific for pancreatitis
what dog is the poster child of pancreatitis?
mini schnauzer
how is pancreatitis prevented in dogs?
avoid feeding high fat foods/treats
eliminate risk factors (keep dog out of garbage can)
how is pancreatitis in dogs treated?
iv fluids & supportive care
aggressive fluid therapy, analgesia, antiemetics (not metoclopramide!!), plasma transfusions, & nutritional support (enteral preferred to parenteral)
