Feline Flash Notes - Vaccinations Flashcards
what are core vaccines? when are they given & why?
core vaccines are recommended for all cats & are given as early as 6 weeks of age & boostered every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age except for rabies - maternaly derived antibodies will cause vaccine inactivation and they are generally lost by 9-12 weeks but can be as early as 6 weeks - rabies is given as early as 8-12 weeks depending on the type & then every 1-3 years
what makes up the FVRCP vaccine?
FPV antigen: feline panleuk, FHV-1 antigen: feline herpes virus, FCV: feline calicivirus
what is the preferred vaccine type for feline panleukopenia?
modified live - rapid & more effective
what is the preferred vaccine type for FHV-1?
modified live or inactivated
what is the preferred vaccine type for FCV?
multivalent modified-live & inactivated
what is the preferred vaccine type for rabies?
inactivated only!!!! do not use modified live in cats!!!!!!
what is the purpose of vaccinating against FHV-1?
reduces clinical signs, may not reduce recurrences or establish latency, but DOES NOT prevent infection
injection site sarcomas are associated with what vaccines?
rabies & FeLV
why do we think we see injection site sarcomas?
likely due to the inactivated vaccine adjuvant
where do you give rabies & FeLV vaccines?
rabies on the right distal pelvic limb, FeLV in the left distal pelvic limb
what vaccines should be given to FeLV positive cats?
only core vaccines unless they are at risk of a non-core disease because even then they may not be able to amount an adequate immune response
what vaccines should be given to FIV positive cats?
only core vaccines unless at risk for non-core - they should be able to amount an immune response early in the disease process
what are 2 very controversial feline vaccinations?
FIV & FCoV vaccines
what is the preferred vaccine type for FeLV?
adjuvanted inactivated or nonadjuvanted recombinant
