what is the common history of tetanus suspects?
history of a wound or surgery in the past few weeks
what are the main clinical signs seen with tetanus?
sawhorse stance, rictus smile/spasmodic grin, muscle stiffness, ears drawn back, protruding nictitating membrane, lockjaw, & opisthotonus
how is tetanus diagnosed?
usually based on history & clinical presentation
tetanus antitoxin is only effective against what?
only effective against unbound or free neurotoxin
how is tetanus treated?
tetanus antitoxin, clean/debride wound, penicillin g/metronidazole, sedation!!!!! either diazepam or acepromazine, & environment should be quiet & dark with well-padded bedding
how is tetanus prevented?
immunization & aseptic surgical techniques
what animals are most susceptible to tetanus? what animals are most resistant?
most susceptible - horses
most resistant - dogs & cats
