what is the classic case of vesicular stomatitis?
herd or group outbreaks of vesicular lesions usually in cattle & horses (occasionally swine, camelids) that is REPORTABLE
what are the main clinical signs seen with vesicular stomatitis?
fever, salivation, lameness, vesicles, & ulcers
what other diseases can vesicular stomatitis not be differentiated from?
foot & mouth, swine vesicular disease, vesicular exanthema of swine
what is the classic presentation of an animal with vesicular stomatitis?
occurs in the western hemisphere (only warm, humid areas) - adults older than 1 year, zoonotic disease is possible in humans but rare in sheep/goats
cattle/horses»»»swine»»camelids
what is the test of choice for vesicular stomatitis?
ELISA most commonly used - need to identify the viral antigens or antibodies
what is the treatment used for vesicular stomatitis?
symptomatic care, antibiotics, analgesics, soft feed, & bedding
what is the prognosis for mortality in animals with vesicular stomatitis? what effect is seen economically?
excellent prognosis - rare mortality
significant economic loss
how is vesicular stomatitis prevented?
QUARANTINE FARM & isolate affected animals
sanitation/disinfection, insect control/exposure, & some vaccines are available
what are the 2 serotypes of vesicular stomatitis?
new jersey & indiana - variable morbidity with low mortality
how is vesicular stomatitis transmitted?
insects - sand/black flies, mosquitoes
direct contact - saliva, epithelium, exudates, & fomites
T/F: vesicular stomatitis is a zoonotic disease for humans in close contact with infected animals
true
what is the etiology of vesicular stomatitis?
family rhabdoviridae virus, genus vesiculovirus
what lesions are seen in cattle with vesicular stomatitis? what lesions are seen in horses?
cattle - lesions in one primary area of the body, vesicles/ulcers (mouth, teets, snout, coronary bands, interdigital spaces)
horses - vesicles & lameness (mouth, nares, sheath, udder, coronary bands, & ventral abdomen)
