Equine Flash Notes - EDM & NAD Flashcards
what breeds have a genetic predisposition for equine neuroaxonal dystrophy?
appaloosa, standardbred, & paso fino
what is the typical age of a horse with equine degenerative myeloencephaloapthy?
suckling & weanling foals, usually under 6 months, never over 2 years of age!!!!!
what are two preventative measures that can be used when equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy is prevalent?
provide rich green forage & vitamin e supplementation!!!!
what is the relationship between equine neuroaxonal dystrophy & equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy?
EDM is thought to be a more severe form of NAD
what is the prognosis of NAD & EDM for recovery? what about for plateau/lifespan?
poor for recovery - good for plateau of clinical signs & normal lifespan
what is the treatment of choice for NAD/EDM?
vitamin e supplementation may result in stabilization but is not curative
what is the test of choice for diagnosing NAD/EDM?
serum viramin e concentration (will be very low or undetectable)
what are the first & second most common neuro diseases in horses?
1 is EPM, & #2 is NAD/EDM
what is the common history & signalment of horses with NAD/EDM?
suckling/weanling foals under 6 months of age with lack of access to rich green forage
what is the classic case presentation of a horse with NAD/EDM?
weanling foal with slowly progressive taxia & weakness in all 4 limbs
what clinical signs are seen with NAD/EDM?
symmetric ataxia/weakness in pelvic limbs, clumsiness, hypometria, falls when running, & hyporeflexive over neck/trunk (slap test, cutaneous trunci reflex, & cervicofacial reflex)
how is NAD/EDM prevented?
provide rich green forage & vitamin e supplementation where disease is prevalent
T/F: NAD/EDM is thought to be caused by a vitamin E deficiency with a familial/genetic component
